What is Eroguro?

Eroguro (エログロ) is a Japanese term that is derived from the English words, erotic and grotesque. It describes a genre of art that, as one may have guessed, is erotic and grotesque. I won’t act like a webmaster that has a PHD on the topic, but I’d say it’s an interest of passion to me. The history is a bit daunting for me to info-dump as of this writing, and there are other people that have explained it, but for now, I’d like to yap about what I’m comfortable with here.

Eroguro does not have to be outright pornographic to be considered eroguro. It also does not have to be brutally gory, although it can be. I happen to be one of the individuals that find beauty in the bloodiness, but I am also fond of the more subtly gut-churning subjects (see: Unofficial Categories of Eroguro).

As with many things, there is a range of eroticism and grotesqueness. The factor of grotesqueness is a little easier to quantify and name; most of us humans have a built-in mechanism to feel repulsed, to feel a spike of adrenaline, at the sight of bodily fluids and evidence of decay. Then there’s eroticism, which can lean subtle or more explicit, and even subtleness can be considered explicit depending on one’s cultural perspective.

I came up with these labels for the sake of organization, and to more easily yap about certain aspects that come forth more prominently.
